AMERICAN CYTOGENETICS CONFERENCE - XLI
May 13 - 16, 2010 Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Niagara Falls, Ontario CANADA
Meeting Coordinator: Avi Tharapel, PhD. Department of Human Genetics Univeristy of Tennessee Memphis Memphis, TN USA (901) 448-6676 atharapel@uthsc.edu
Program Committee Chair: Susan Zneimer, PhD, FACMG Associate Medical Director, US Labs 4301 Lost Hills Road Calabasas, CA 91301 (818) 867-1354 szneimer@uslabs.net Program Overview
The meeting will follow the traditional format of plenary sessions in an informal atmosphere and will include presentations from a wide variety of cytogenetic subspecialty areas. Students and young investigators are encouraged to present. There will be three Student Travel Awards.
Invited Speakers and Topics Norma Nowak - Roswell Park: Cancer Cytogenetics & Microarrays Dr. Norma Nowak is Director, DNA Microarray and Genomics Facility at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Her research includes the effort to discover the genetic alterations that result in cancer by generating a genome-wide resource of mapped BAC clones from the RPCI-11 human BAC library, for their application as tools for FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) analysis of chromosomal rearrangements in human cancer, and the development of high throughput analysis of gene expression patterns in the nervous system.
Evan Eichler - University of Washington, Seattle: Gene duplications and DNA transpositions within the human genome Dr. Evan Eichler is a Principal Investigator, Professor of Genome Sciences at UW in Seattle. His research interests includes the understanding of the evolution, pathology and mechanism(s) of recent gene duplication and DNA transposition within the human genome. Our work involves the systematic discovery of these regions, the development of methods to assess their variation, the detection of signatures of rapid gene evolution and ultimately the correlation of this genetic variation with phenotypic differences within and between species.
Oliver Ryder - San Diego Zoo: Animal cytogenetics Dr. Oliver Ryder is Adjunct Professor of Biology, UCSD, and Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species, San Diego Zoo. The genetics group at the CRES (Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species - a division of the Zoological Society of San Diego) undertakes comparative cytogenetic and molecular genetics studies involving a diverse array of species suitable as models for investigating relative rates of evolution among different taxa, population structure and systematics. Additionally, research pertinent to planning and management for selected mammalian, reptilian and avian species of conservation concern is undertaken utilizing appropriate techniques, including the development and application of new methodologies.
Distinguished Cytogeneticist Award The 2010 ACC Distinguished Cytogeneticist Award recipient will be Gordon Dewald. Please plan to join us in honoring Dr. Dewald at the award ceremony on Friday evening.
The ACC encourages abstracts from all areas of cytogenetic investigation. Sessions will be devoted to clinical, cancer, non-human, and basic research in cytogenetics and molecular techniques. Please use the instructions on the website (below) to format your abstract submission, and indicate your preference between Poster or Platform presentation. Only those received by February 8, 2010 will be guaranteed to be reviewed for presentation and publication. Abstracts cannot be accepted for presentation until the presenter’s registration fee has been received.
Saturday Afternoon Activities In keeping with past meeting formats, Saturday afternoon will be free time. Three planned excursions will be available to meeting registrants and accompanying family members. All trips are limited so early registration is encouraged. We will provide a box lunch for each activity as well as transportation, which is included in the activity fee.
Venue and Accommodations Instructions Information for Exhibitors (Click Here for more information)- We are limited to 25 exhibitors, so please contact us right away if you wish to exhibit at the meeting in Niagara.
Registration for the meeting is cheaper for ACC members*, and more expensive for non-members. Fees include meeting registration, opening reception, Friday evening wine tasting, continental breakfast and coffee breaks, and the Saturday evening BBQ party and entertainment. Registration deadline is April 12, 2010.
*Dues for the American Cytogenetics Conference In July 2005, after many years of informal organization, the American Cytogenetic Conference group at last incorporated. This permits us much more flexibility and stability in planning conferences, meetings, and communications within the profession. We welcome all members of the cytogenetics community to join ACC. Dues are just $50 per year, and can be paid at the same time as your meeting registration.
